Trip Reports

Ray... rained on

roger got muddy, ElMap a few weekends ago.

Dan M. did montoya. Didn't start survey until 3:pm. Got perhaps 500 ft. in Outlaw. Dropped off ray's hobo in junction.

Robert G. went to horse thief in wyoming. Has map of Horse Thief. Much like Ft. Stanton. Major breakthrough was made at a convention some time ago. Plans to try to do Bighorn soon. Bighorn is connected to Horse Thief. A cave was found when mining for uranium up there. The cave is hot. Rough 8 mile road to these caves. There is a hut there with much cave graphiti. Hut has mice, so they slept outside. Used reflective tape on popcycle sticks to find route out fast.

Sharon... no caving. Balance $2058.38. $600 set aside for 50th aniv. party

Duke. No caving.

Aaron did Robinson's at regional.

Sherie did not cave at regional, but took care of dogs. Sherie asks that you bury your leavings since the animals like to dig them up.

George, no caving, but has a very nice LED flashlight, many LED's. A windup LED flashlight, and a flashing LED thingy. Big flashing marker.

Cliff? (New guy) went to ElMap. Surveyed a little less than 300 ft. Only 4-5 shots, when compass broke.

Linda Starr did visit a cave in Budapest, while on 200 mile bike ride from Vienna to Budapest. Small cave called the Holy Grotto on the budda side of the river. Much was dug out to hold masses in the cave. Sharon was there once too! Went to big hot-spring roman bath in Budapest.

New lady, no caves yet.

Fred (from az? a coupld of years ago) got into acorn. Walked in NE Pecos. Saw a nice new truck that was dumped down a cliff?

Jennifer went caving at regional, robinson's. Went to clay sculpture room. Also did ElMap, and got two flat tires.

Announcements

GypKap oct 13

There is a work trip Oct 6-13 (where?)

ElMap possible in october.

Dan will direct a survey training, mid-week at Dan's house. Perhaps 2 weeks from tonight... Oct 8? 7:PM

Regional

Labor day weekend meeting in black range. Meeting was saturday morning.

Bob Rogers wants to form a committee to find a potential site to host a future NSS convention. Bob likes Ruidoso. Has convention center, but camping is a problem.

Conv. Bid

Blake has a $200 check from NSS stipend for submitting convention proposal, 2011.

Linda Starr suggests we use it to reimburse some of the expenses. There were printing expenses, t-shirts, etc... Socorro does not make an expense claim. Members of the committee should submit expense reports for reimbursements.

Duke suggests that if not all $200 is claimed, donate it to SWR towards proposal for 2013ish convention. Ray suggests blowing any extra $$ on a party. Kevin supports party funds idea.

Sharon notes

  • $200 spent on T-shirts, most of which was recovered.
  • $96 banner printing
  • $30 postage
  • Blake did not request reimbursement.

That puts us about $70 ahead on proposal expenses, after the reimbursement payment.

Jennifer asks Linda to send a note to NSS convention committee that expense reimbursements be paid to Grotto Chair, Sharon. We will most likely need receipts for all expenses, which will be reimbursed up to $200.

ElMap roads have been closed since Park Service took over. We can no longer drive the back country. We may want to camp at trail-head for more productive trips.

Future Trips

Roger wants to look at some of the small caves in the east mountains, and check out rumors of more possible caves.

New lady is a beginner, so she would like to have an equipment list for these caves. It would be nice to post these beginner articles on the WWW site.

Liz and Rose know the owners of Cooper-Ellis, to try to get permission.

Embudo is on the ski run. Needs to be dug out. Stuff has collected on the solid steel gate.

Would like to plan an Alabaster trip soon.

Hummingbird in the Jemez, near Fenton Lake is interesting, but not worth the trip in itself. Plan other activities in the area in addition to Hummingbird. You can see the cave in 5 minutes. Total dark is not achieved.

Perhaps we could do a fall color trip to 4th of July canyon.

Cliff is flying to AK for caving Oct 30-Nov 4. Association of AK cave studies, fall project. He paid $200 to fly to Tulsa, will drive from there.

Haloween Party

Jennifer Boyette will throw a party. Come in costume. Jennifer will provide booze and other drinks. Rest is pot-luck.

  • Pumpkin Carving?
  • Costume Contest
  • Gross Food

Friday, 26 Oct was chosen for date. 7:PM This is close to Cottonwood, near Paseo and Coors. E-Mail JB other ideas, or for help.

Lobby for election nominations at the Mon, Oct 29 meeting.

Robert grubbs would be interested in planning a southern guads rope cave trip. Perhaps deep.
