A guy from ABQ parks and rec, "Chairman of Fun", is hosting a learn-to-cave for kids. Needs people to teach caving. He was unable to come to todays meeting, may come soon. Kids of 13-17.
Baca
Ted Benson? from Pecos historical. He has mon-tue off. Water at Pecos is high. Short route to Baca cave is down. Toby Garcia, land owner, may have a short-cut to the cave through his land. Seemed open to paying for survey, we may be able to work well with him. Budget has dried up. Would like to do an initial tour to see scope of job. He is working on a < 3 mi approach with neighboring private land owners. Still may happen, just slowing down. Pecos Nat. Historical Park Cave Inventory. Claims cave is "unexplored". 2 small drops, 20-30'. Wants Map, inventory, ... seems to be a detailed scope, formed off of a well-informed boilerplate.
Publication
Victor published a paper in Science using cave data to date Grand Canyon. It is causing contravercy with canyon geologists.
Science Fair
Linda, Rose and Sherie judged. A junior did some work on temperature effects of crystal growth. A great effort for a kid without support. Would like grotto permission to give a Junior reward this year, to encourage a great work by a younger student. The senior project was done around Candle Cave by a young lady who was mentored by Dianna Northrup, and Laura Bossy, so although her project was excellent, it seemed unfair to judge on the same metric with the Junior. Both were excellent efforts, but with very different levels of support. They offered to split the award, $100 to the senior, and $50 to the junior. Grotto expense would be $75. Sherie makes a motion to allocate another $25 for grotto prizes. Duke seconds. Motion passed.
