NSS Convention 2013 2014 bid
Linda Starr reports on the status of the NSS 2013 convention bid.
There has been some opposition due to lack of confidence we have the people to put it on. There is also a conflict with ISS, which will be in late august. It will make it hard for some proposed organisers to support both. However, it may help that we are close to TX, and can attract some people from ICS. Perhaps consider moving to 2014 for more time, and to avoid ICS. Let midwest try to host in 2013, if they come up with a bid.
Socorro location
NM tech has dorms, classrooms, arts centers. Donald Tripp has land he is willing to mow for the campground. Will need to coordinate with some neighbours. Will need security. Campground is 1.5 miles from campus. Will need shuttles. NM tech can offer 300 rooms. swimming pool on campus open to dorm residents.
Roswell was considered ENMU and NMI might be able to host. It has been some 25 years since our last convention. Socorro has not been approached with proposed 2014 delay.
Current Volunteer Leaders
Rose will help registration. Liz with food. Kevin will help with food vendors, howdy party and banquet. Jaquie and Harry Burgis have agreed to help with JSS. Harry Burgis has expressed willingness to take over as proposed treasurer. Bob Rogers agreed to handle emergency response coordination.
We will not propose in VT. Most likely at spring or fall NSS board mtg.
We might need some 100 volunteers to run conv, expect about 1000 attendees. Hosts would get a $3000 stipend in addition to expenses. Original 2011 bid was up against CO, and they had a strong bid. CO won that vote 8 to 6, it was close, and they asked us to present again.
Discussion and general information
Hosting would be a good oportunity to meet cavers from around the world.
Sherie suggested we do a slide show of convention so people who have not been to convention so people who have not been get an idea of what is involved.
Texas howdy party had a trip roper, mechanical bull, western swing band.
Wed night party. thurs is photo, fri is banquet.
VT conv commitee had a core of 30 main volunteer leaders. We have around 10-15 core members committed at this time. John Lyles will help with trips. Lois Mono from SF will help with publications.
Bid Status
Linda wants a show of full grotto support to take to SWR. Ken Harrington, 6/3/2010, following 30may communication. Following memorial day regional near pinion cave. He claimed almost total lack of support at this meeting. There were few if any people from Sandia at this SWR meeting.
Liz moves that we pursue a bid for the 2014 NSS convention. Seconded by Linda.
Sherie wants to see how many people are up to volunteer to help. Core volunteer positions are:
- security
- Bob Cornish has agreed to head campground
- maint -- plumbing, cleaning stations, trash removal. WNS decon.
- registration -- rose
- food -- covered , rose, kevin

the source
new newletter. Changed name from Third Source.
Liz moved for physical copy. many people could not open. Contact blake if you want a hard copy.
Rose proposes we keep the name, Third Source, which it was some 26 or 27 years ago. Blake feels that Third source suggests heresay, second hand info. He prefers the more authorative name The Source, which suggests that it is the information of record.
- 17 in favor of changing
- 2 in favor of new name
We resolve to keep the old name.
2011 spring BOG mtg
we propose to host. Need to arrange loging. parties. a big room for all day meeting, they tend to set up a large U shaped table, with voting circuits. 16 BOG members. Jennifer Foote proposed we host, she is a member. March or April. Big meeting would likely be at museum or UNM.
Rose proposes we host BOG. Liz second.
- 13 for

Liz proposes we host, try to use ski area.
